Why doesn’t Linea have its own token, and does it need one?

Hi Linea community!

I’ve been wondering for a while why Linea doesn’t have its own native token yet. We’ve seen that many Layer 2 solutions based on Ethereum, like Arbitrum, Optimism, and others, have already launched or plan to launch their tokens to incentivize users and support ecosystem growth.

Linea focuses on creating a scalable infrastructure for Ethereum using zk-Rollups, which is an excellent solution in itself. However, the absence of a token raises a few questions:

  1. Does the lack of a token impact user adoption? Many projects use tokens to drive activity, decentralize governance, and attract developers.
  2. What are your plans regarding a potential token? Has there been any discussion about this, or is the decision to avoid launching a token intentional for specific reasons?
  3. Could a token help decentralize and fund the Linea ecosystem? This is an important point for any L2 solution aiming to become a leader in the space.

I’m curious to hear from both the team and the community. Maybe a token isn’t necessary, and focusing solely on protocol development is the right approach. Or could the launch of a token provide Linea with additional momentum for growth?

Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions!

Yes, LIN is a good name for a token. The bigger question here is what its utility will be

As we all know, crypto enthusiasts often check CoinMarketCap to gauge a project’s success. Right now, when users visit Linea’s page on CoinMarketCap. com/currencies/linea/, they see an inactive page, lacking a token chart or performance metrics. Many may not go deeper into understanding the project and might move on if they don’t see an active token presence, especially when they rely on token progress to evaluate a project.

Very true! But I’m pretty sure that if an airdrop is conducted everyone will chase Linea
