First, I’d like to commend the clarity and depth of this proposal. It’s evident that a great deal of thought has gone into ensuring each component, from L1 and L2 finality to block validation, effectively supports Linea’s goal of becoming a fully decentralized L2 chain. I especially appreciate the clear breakdown of each phase and the approach to handle potential issues proactively.
Questions and Points of Interest:
-
L1 & L2 Finality Distinction: The distinction between L1 and L2 finality is well-structured. Are there specific scenarios where L2 finality might be considered sufficient, even without L1 finality? This might give insight into use cases or optimizations for minimal delay.
-
Validator Rotation and Byzantine Fault Tolerance: The outer protocol’s role in validator rotation and liveness is key. Could you clarify how validator rotations are scheduled or randomized? Also, in the unlikely event of prolonged inactivity, could this have implications on network stability or validator availability?
-
Auction-Based Block Proposer Selection: The auction mechanism for block proposals is interesting and inclusive. In terms of participation, how does the protocol prevent collusion or centralized bidding by a subset of nodes?
-
Cost Management in L1 Finalization: The batching and compression of data into blobs is a great way to reduce costs. How is the optimal blob size determined, and could this be adjusted dynamically to adapt to changing transaction volumes or gas costs?
-
Merkle Tree for Reward Allocation: Using a Merkle tree for decentralized rewards is innovative. Could you provide more context on the types of proofs validators will need to submit to claim their rewards, and if there’s any periodic auditing planned for this data?
everything up to the mark, hope for best for whole world, thanks to whole team of Linea
I believe recovery mode preventing stagnation from nodes would be something needed more emphasis’s.
Having a huge difference in separation of network power is something most economies need to flourish.
The definitely need to throw more light on the recovery mode
What will be the proportion of nodes with no shares or very little shares? Although there are measures to prevent them from lacking motivation, is this proportion under control?
Great work, Florian, and thanks for laying out such a comprehensive path toward Linea’s decentralization. I appreciate how you’ve approached the transition from trusted to proof-of-stake in L2 finality with the QBFT protocol, particularly with the safeguards to maintain the network’s integrity and security.
One question I have is regarding the sealed-bid auction for block proposers. It’s an innovative approach to increase decentralization, but do you foresee any potential entry barriers for smaller nodes given the bidding mechanism? Ensuring a balance between inclusivity and the burn incentives could be key to maintaining decentralization in the long run.
Overall, this proposal is a promising step toward making Linea a robust, decentralized L2, and I’m excited to see how the community and developers contribute to its evolution.
Great article, I hope they will take into account what you wrote, strive to make the network as good as possible and expand its operation and improve it. There has to be growth, preferably for the better, but it’s often a trial and error process. Good luck and let’s do better
This proposal is ambitious but well-considered. The combination of decentralized validation, a unique auction-based proposer selection, and clear provisions for network reliability show a commitment to making Linea robust and inclusive. This is a good start.
Sounds. Decentralized is the key. Liove the idea
wow!!!
its a amazing proposal and looks too promising
thank you.
Ok. This is one of the most in depth pieces regarding decentralization, finality and all the works that actually caught my attention. The proposal is clear too and not unnecessarily bulky and a good read as well. Look forward to implementation.
